Personal Bio

Professor Elaine Chapman is Deputy Head of School (Research) in the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia. Her research focuses on educational assessment, student wellbeing, educational psychology, and evidence-informed approaches to improving teaching and learning. She has led and contributed to numerous national and international research projects and is widely recognised for her work on assessment design, mental health and wellbeing in educational settings, and the use of research to inform policy and practice. Professor Chapman works closely with schools, education systems, and community partners to develop practical solutions to complex educational challenges. Her research has informed initiatives aimed at supporting positive mental health, strengthening educational outcomes, and enhancing the experiences of students and educators. She is a frequent keynote speaker and professional learning facilitator, with a particular interest in helping schools translate research evidence into sustainable and effective practice. As Chair of this symposium, Professor Chapman brings extensive expertise in school wellbeing, educational research, and organisational improvement, making her ideally placed to guide discussions on creating trauma-informed schools that support both staff and students to move from burnout towards balance.

Stella Smith, Senior Psychologist

Stella started her career as a teacher and then school psychologist in the Department of Education (DoE), WA. She progressed into the Department of Health as a Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) Clinician and then as a Child Adolescent and Mental Health Service (CAMHS) practitioner. She led the implementation of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention in Schools (TCIS) with Cornell University into the Specialised School for Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSENBE) school in DoE. Stella now works as an international TCI Instructor and continues to service schools to consult with staff working with students with complex needs. Stella is completing her PhD in teacher burnout and Post Crisis Responses in schools.
